Dear friend,
I have been asked many times over the years what I would say to a president if I had the chance.
I have never answered. Until tonight.
Imagine it. A quiet room in the White House. No cameras. No reporters. No staff waiting by the door. Just an old man from the Church and the most attacked man in America, sitting across a small table from each other.
Five minutes.
I have thought carefully about how I would spend them. Tonight I want to tell you. Because what I would say to him is also, in a way, what I want to say to you.
Before I begin, let me place something in your hands.
Everything I would want him to understand about why he is still standing, I have already written down. It is called They Tried To Stop Him: What The Bible Says About Donald Trump. It traces the pattern from Joseph to David to Daniel to the present day. If I only had five minutes, I would hand him a copy on the way out. You can find it by clicking on the image below:
Alternatively, you may find it here: https://fatherthomasletters.com/products/they-tried-to-stop-him-what-the-bible-says-about-donald-trump
The first minute. Thank you.
I would start by thanking him.
Not for his policies first. For his endurance.
He did not have to do any of this. He was a rich man with a famous name. He could have spent the rest of his life on golf courses. Instead he chose the one job in America that guaranteed he would be hated, investigated, impeached twice, charged, and shot at.
I would thank him for the justices he appointed, who returned the question of abortion to the people in 2022. There are children alive today who would not have been. That alone is a debt I do not know how to repay.
I would thank him for saying the name of God out loud in rooms where it had gone quiet. For standing up in Butler, Pennsylvania, with blood on his face, and raising his fist instead of hiding.
And I would thank him for you. For being the first man in a long time who looked at people like you and did not look down.
The second minute. A warning.
Then I would do something harder. I would warn him.
Not because I doubt him. Because I care enough to say it.
In Second Chronicles chapter 26 there is a king named Uzziah. He was a good king. He was chosen young. God made him strong. His armies won. His fame spread all the way to Egypt.
And then verse 16 says this.
But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall.
After he became powerful.
Not while he was struggling. Not while his enemies were at the gate. After. When the winning came.
That is the danger for a man who has survived everything. His enemies could not stop him. Only pride can. I would look him in the eye and tell him that the only person left who can defeat Donald Trump is Donald Trump.
He might not like hearing it. I would say it anyway. A friend who only flatters you is not a friend.
The third minute. A prayer.
Then I would ask if I could pray with him.
I would pray the prayer of Solomon. You will find it in First Kings chapter 3.
God came to the young king in a dream and said, ask for whatever you want me to give you. Solomon could have asked for riches. For long life. For the death of his enemies.
He asked for this. Verse 9.
Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.
And verse 10 says the Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.
I would pray that over him. Not for victory in November. Not for the defeat of the people who oppose him. For wisdom. For a discerning heart. Because a man with wisdom will find his way to the victories. A man without it will lose them even when he wins.
The fourth minute. You.
Then I would tell him about you.
I would tell him about the letters. About the people who write to me from kitchen tables and hospital waiting rooms and quiet houses that used to be full. The widows. The veterans. The grandmothers whose grandchildren will not speak to them over a hat.
I would tell him that many of you pray for him every night. More faithfully than most people pray for anyone.
I would tell him that you did not stand with him because you thought he was perfect. You knew he was not. You stood with him because you saw what was being done to him, and you recognized it. You had seen it before. In the Book.
And I would ask him never to forget you. Not in a speech. In the decisions nobody sees.
The fifth minute. The reason.
In the last minute I would tell him why I believe he is still alive.
Not luck. Not good security. One inch in Butler was not luck.
God has always chosen specific men for specific moments. Joseph in Egypt. David in Israel. Daniel in Babylon. None of them were perfect. All of them were opposed. And the opposition always followed the same pattern, right up until the moment God turned it.
I would tell him he is living inside that pattern. That the hard years were not punishment. They were preparation. And that the question now is not whether God can use him. It is whether he will stay humble enough to be used.
Then I would hand him the guide. And I would leave.
That guide is everything I would want him to know, written down in full. If you have not read it, read it this weekend: https://fatherthomasletters.com/products/they-tried-to-stop-him-what-the-bible-says-about-donald-trump
I will probably never sit in that room. I am an old man, and the White House does not call the Vatican for advice.
But here is what I want you to hold onto tonight.
You do not need five minutes with the president. You have something far greater. You have unlimited time with the King.
And He hears you. Every word. Whether or not anyone in Washington ever does.
So use that time this weekend. Pray for him. Pray for wisdom. Pray Solomon's prayer over him by name.
It may be the most important political act you take all year.
God bless you, friend. And God bless the president.
With you in prayer always,
Father Thomas
This weekend I want you to do three things:
One. Pray First Kings chapter 3 verse 9 over the president by name once each day this weekend. Give your servant Donald a discerning heart to govern your people. Say it out loud. Then pray it for yourself.
Two. Read Second Chronicles chapter 26 in one sitting. All twenty three verses. Watch how Uzziah rose. Then watch what happened after verse 16. Ask yourself where pride has crept into your own life since things started going well.
Three. Read They Tried To Stop Him this weekend: https://fatherthomasletters.com/products/they-tried-to-stop-him-what-the-bible-says-about-donald-trump.
It is everything I would tell him if five minutes were not enough.
P.S. If you want to go deeper on anything I have written, everything is available at fatherthomasletters.com/products — including The Signs Are Here, which maps today's headlines directly against the specific passages that described them, and the Father Thomas Prayer Card Collection, which many of you have told me you return to every morning. Take a look when you have a moment.
